Happy Mardi Gras!
King Cakes have been a tradition in our home since my family celebrated Mardi Gras in New Orleans a few years ago. Looking back, it was ones of the best times we've had as a family, and our yearly King Cake is a reminder of that time together. A traditional King Cake has a little plastic baby inside, which represents baby Jesus -- whoever gets the piece of cake with the baby should buy the next King Cake.
Since I am the one always buying the King Cake, my daughter thinks finding the baby is good luck. We have yet to tell her otherwise. This year we purchased our King Cake from Publix. I didn't notice the little baby on the outside (which is more common now) to put in myself, so I assumed they just baked it inside. Big mistake. As we ate our cake for breakfast this morning, no one found the baby. Disappointed, my daughter left for school with little hope that the tiny piece leftover contained her trinket.
Being the awesome mom that I am (and not wanting to deal with a meltdown later in the day), I decided to cut into the rest of the cake to confirm that the baby was there. To my surprise, our king cake was baby-less 🙁
I'm not one to complain, but-- who makes a king cake without the little plastic baby?! I buy the king cake more for the baby than the cake-- as ridiculous as that sounds. I was determined to get our baby, so I packed the rest of the cake up and brought it back to Publix where I nicely exchanged it for a new cake (complete with baby) at guest services. You have got to love Publix -- they didn't blink an eye!
Now, my husband and I have to eat another King Cake so we can make it look like the baby was inside the whole time.
Totally worth it!
